A LITTLE MORE ABOUT CORACTIVE

Founded in Quebec City in 1998, Coractive specializes in the design and manufacture of specialty optical fibers, as well as the sale of fiber lasers. The company serves the telecommunications and LiDAR sensing markets, along with the medical and scientific fields.

As part of the largest expansion project in its history, Coractive invested over $34 million to build a brand-new, state-of-the-art plant in Quebec City. This new building, now the company's head office, houses a vast cleanroom equipped with high-tech systems designed to produce optical fibers at industrial volumes, meeting the industry's most stringent standards.

Consab was commissioned to design and build this cleanroom, a highly controlled environment at the very heart of Coractive's production capacity.

FEATURES AND CHALLENGES

  •  Controlled environments of exceptional height, the machinery used by Coractive in its cleanrooms far exceeds the dimensions typically encountered in this type of project. Some controlled environments reach up to five storeys in height, requiring engineering and construction solutions adapted to vertical spaces well beyond conventional standards.

  • Installation of the 35-foot Norbec walls in a single piece, with the building's outer shell already built when interior work began, the Consab team had to be resourceful to bring in and position these oversized panels. The chosen solution involved using an industrial telescopic handler, which required building a custom platform capable of supporting the equipment and ensuring precise, safe installation.
  • A project of exceptional size, totalling 60,000 ft², the scale of the job site required rigorous planning and large-scale logistics management.

  •  Comprehensive health and safety planning, the vertical nature of the controlled environments introduced site-specific risks, particularly related to working at height over extended periods. An in-depth risk assessment was carried out beforehand, leading to strict protocols and preventive measures adapted to each zone, ensuring the safety of all teams on site throughout the project.

“Faced with a complex construction project, Consab's ability to stay organized and in control was remarkable. Even when I was away, I could easily follow progress thanks to their detailed charts. Their seriousness and mastery of the project gave me the impression of having truly committed and competent partners. Would you recommend Consab? Absolutely, for their sound advice and exceptional efficiency in carrying out a project as ambitious as our cleanroom.”
